Lore Dump: Wizards & Witches
Wizards and Witches are typically known for magic and arcana with witches leaning more towards dark magic within history while wizards in most fantasy genres are depicted as old men in tall towers that study and perfect spellcasting and are knowledgeable of the stars and beyond.
In Foxbridge, there are some parallels but not many.
Because there is so little magic left in Foxbridge, it can only be obtained through magical beings or creatures. Humans that possess the knowledge and skill to acquire them and harvest from them are often called wizards or witches. They are humans that seek the knowledge and power of magic.
Humans cannot create magic and they are not born with natural magical reserves, so they must take from other things which have a magical core.
After the thousand year war and the scattering of the dragons, humans noticed that much of the magic in the land and its creatures either died or seemed to go with these dragons. There are still magical creatures that manage to live in Foxbridge even without dragons but humans have been hunting them to extinction since the take over.
These specific humans often take magical beings and hold them in cages and study them or harvest parts of their bodies for magical use.
The most common magical creature and the easiest use of magical power was done through the pixies. They are small human shaped beings with wings that live in tiny nooks of forests and trees. They were easily caught if found and kept in lamps like fireflies.
Humans that practiced magic would keep these lamps with them and draw their power from the pixie to cast spells. This method was the longest lasting magical core that humans could possess.
Unfortunately, due to the inefficiency in their methods, the pixies would eventually die from the siphon of magical power and the humans would have to get a new one to use for their spells. This endless cycle of torture led to the extinction of the pixies.
Humans then turned to other ways of obtaining magic. Another more modernly used creature was the shapeshifting wolves of the northern mountains. Hunters would be sent to capture them and wizards/witches would skin them and use their pelts, which would allow them to cast illusion magic with ease. Shapeshifters were also known for their good luck and fortune, so their paws were used as wards and protection from bad luck and omens.
Wizards and witches are cruel and vile beings that walk the earth of Foxbridge, often housed by nobles and royalty. The most famous wizard of Foxbridge is one who lives in the dwarven castle of Ruby City. His name is Professor Slaven. He was the first and only wizard to eat the heart of a dragon which he obtained many magical abilities from.
